PENIS ENVY
Poetry
by Michelle Cameron

The way you stand
braced, hands free
and then one single
shake and zip
well, who wouldn’t
envy that?
But then I see
my son unsure
how to deal with
shifting, sticking
a mental slap
to hands that
itch to handle
the start caught
unawares
and all the years ahead
the rise and point
the rush to hide
the evidence
a dog burying
the scratch and dirt
the backseat shuffle
the barnyard crow
the rising flag
that leads every Tom
or Harry around
by the yardstick
by the nose
So envy? No,
affection, sure,
a headlong and
lengthy, lingering caress,
but still, I’d rather
be the bulls eye
than the dart
