VARIETIES OF MILITARY LUST

Poetry by Michelle Cameron

I once lusted after a woman
in my army barracks
watched her soaping her peeling back,
wanted to caress her long, golden arm,
burdened with her M16.

It didn’t last beyond
a few obsessive sun scorched days
spying on her as she hiked up
the rocky trail,
watching her sleep
shifting the green blanket
in slow, measured waves

I once longed for
the touch of a certain man
after catching his glance
sweeping across my khaki chest

the silence between us
building into urgent need
a flare satisfied
with our single, shocking kiss.

I once let my gaze
shadow an whole squadron
of air force cadets:
their bristling arrogance
and tight, bundled energy
as much an aphrodisiac
as oysters and champagne
arrayed on a patio
with wind winking candles

and once, standing for hours
in forced formation,
I fell in love with the sky –
so free and unrestrained
and opposite of everything
hostile and guarded and armed.

PENIS ENVY

Poetry by Michelle Cameron

The way you stand
braced, hands free
and then one single
shake and zip

well, who wouldn’t
envy that?

But then I see
my son unsure
how to deal with
shifting, sticking

a mental slap
to hands that
itch to handle
the start caught
unawares

and all the years ahead
the rise and point
the rush to hide
the evidence
a dog burying
the scratch and dirt
the backseat shuffle
the barnyard crow

the rising flag
that leads every Tom
or Harry around
by the yardstick
by the nose

So envy? No,
affection, sure,
a headlong and
lengthy, lingering caress,

but still, I’d rather
be the bulls eye
than the dart
