MOON POEM

by Ruth Mountaingrove

This week's featured poet is one of Humboldt's very own: a gifted performance poet who never fails to leave her charmed audiences smiling and feeling good about the world.

I turn my back on the moon,
She sits in her garden
rocking to moon songs
the dog running off energy
chasing moon music
in the middle of the night.

I turn my back on the moon
wooing sleep, forgetfulness.
The moon burns a flame
through my curtain.
I lie curled in my bed
my eyes shut tight.

I turn my back on the moon;
Lunacy is not for me
not for me the rocking chair
under the moon nor the moon's
shadows dancing with the dog
under the moon's light.

I turn my back on the moon
no garden to rock in, no dog
charged energy crazed
by her laughter bouncing
against the fence.
Not for me that sight.

I turn my back on the moon.
She goes on rocking
the dog goes on running
in my mind. Turning my back,
turning my back I go to sleep.
And dream all is right.
