Poem

SEE

by

Jim Bennett

I see he said
as he stares through screwed up eyes
and plays two handed with his glasses
(lenses thick as tiles)
I think he meant the other sort of see
the sort that doesn't see or rather
sees only what it wants to see
the sort that tries to twist and make
something else of what is said
so that it fits his view
of how things are
or should be
the unfocussed stare attempts to fix
the image he imagines;
the poor sad soul
who lost his mother so many times
and loses her again each night
and all that that brings with it.
pointless trying to tell him that I didn't care
pointless because he believes I must
pointless because
he wants to make me care
to reach inside my head
and rearrange the things in there
but I can only feel his blindness
as he gropes in the dark
